Alberta, Est. 1980
By Col Cseke
A revisionist oral history that recounts how Alberta did indeed separate from Canada in 1980.
Told through the imagined words of invented characters and very real people like Peter Lougheed, Ralph Klein, and Pierre Trudeau, we hear first hand accounts of how a poorly placed "Let The Eastern Bastards Freeze In The Dark" bumper sticker kicked off a fast and furious referendum, launched a thousand grifts, united strange bedfellows and held up a funhouse mirror to our province and country.
This project is born from a frustration and fascination with the growing contemporary movement towards Alberta separatism specifically, and western alienation more generally. By offering some remove from today's immediate politics we're hoping this project can open up a new space for contemplation and conversation.
A work very much in progress, Col is looking for your experiences, memories, and thoughts about what it felt like in Alberta in the late 70's and early 80's.
